Machine Polishing
Machine polishing or ‘mopping’ as it is sometimes called is a technique used by valeters and detailers when cleaning your vehicle.
A polisher can be used to simply apply polish or wax, or the polisher can be used to remove defects and marring from the paintwork.
Defects and marring come in a number of forms:
Swirls, Light scratches, Buffer Trails, Holograms, Oxidation
Almost all of the above damage has been caused by poor wash technique:
Rotary car washes, Brushes, Sponges, Dirty wash water, Dirty cloths, Washing the lowers of the car (sills and wheels etc) before the uppers (bonnet and roof etc), Poor polishing technique either by hand or by machine. Oxidation is caused by a chemical reaction in some colours and types of paint.
The majority of faults can be removed by the careful use of a machine polisher along with the correct compounds and polishes.
After checking the thickness of the paint using an electronic paint thickness guage, we start on a coarser compound (always using the least severe possible to remove the defects present), reducing in coarseness until we use a fine polish.
Once we are happy that as much of the damage has been removed as possible, we will protect the car with either a sealant, a wax, or both depending on your requirements.

The picture above shows a 1998 Vauxhall Corsa with badly oxidised paint.
To the left of the picture can be seen the oxidation as a chalky finish to the paint.
The right of the picture shows what machine polishing can achieve.
Prices for machine polishing are from £25 per hour.
The polishing on the car shown cost £100 and added a few hundred pounds to it’s value!
